Twin tree houses top the Loves Vote this week for photographic producer Thea Charlesworth
Tree houses are the stuff of childhood fantasies and idyllic isolation. They speak of escape from the humdrum ground floor of life, to an airborne world above the clouds. So to find a pair of them is an intriguing paradox – if one is climbing up to escape the realities of the everyday, then surely it would be the most frustrating thing in the world to fling open the curtains and find a new build next door. But clearly these prosaic concerns have not struck AnOther’s Lovers, who voted these Neighbouring Tree Houses the Most Loved of the week for AnOther’s photographic producer Thea Charlesworth.
Tree houses are eternally popular on Loves. We’ve had the romantic, such as this arbour of cherry blossom fashioned into a basket playpen for children in Japan; the modernist, with this mirrored cube that blends seamlessly into the forest; the futuristic – UFO house anyone? – and the classic, in this stunning structure perched far above the jungle canopy. However, Charlesworth’s Love brings a new factor into the mix, as really the perfection of this duet of abodes is decided by the company. As the song goes, everybody needs good neighbours, and if one is stuck up a tree in the middle of nowhere, it is surely imperative that the vertiginous house next door is filled with amenable souls. So, to celebrate her Love, here we ask Charlesworth who would be the perfect people to have near by in case she needs to borrow a cup of sugar.
Why did you love this pair of tree houses?
I don't think I've ever seen a brace of tree houses. A new one for me.
Where would you put them if you owned them?
Top of Big Sur in California. It would suit them perfectly.
Who would be your dream neighbours?
Can it be like the Magic Faraway Tree? Can I find Moonface, Silky and the Saucepan Man at the top?
What would be your perfect view?
The mountains in Kerela. I stayed in this treehouse for a week last year, with The Master and Margarita for company.
What were your favourite childhood games?
Building jumps out of croquet mallets and making my poor dog Pookie do mini dog Olympics. His tail would always uncurl.
Who was your childhood hero?
Violet Elizabeth Bott.
What are you looking forward to about 2014?
My faraway trip to Vietnam with friends and the Pug Olympics my parents are hosting in the Summer.
What was the last thing you bought?
