Lovefoxxx, CSS frontwoman and this week’s special guest lover on AnOthermag.com has chosen the Cinderela building, São Paulo, in her native Brazil as her favourite thing. The building was designed by João Artacho Jurado in 1956, and stood out to Lovefoxxx because of its stunning use of colour and sense of fun.
What's your relationship to the Cinderela building?
When I first moved to São Paulo I remember noticing it, then I realized the name of the building was Cinderela and I fell in love with it. João Artacho Jurado is also responsible for my other favourite buildings in São Paulo – the Bretagne, 1959, the Parque das Hortênsias, 1957, and the Saint Honoré, 1958 – his use of colour is phenomenal and he always made buildings with leisure areas, like pools, gardens and party saloons.
What drew you to Jurado's work?
His father was an anarchist and didn't want him to do traditional subjects at school so he only finished first grade. He wasn't an architect. He'd come up with the ideas and get people to develop a project around them.
To help with the sales of his apartments, he offered potential residents a telephone line and a car. For the opening of the Bretagne he threw a huge party and invited Roy Rogers and that year’s Miss America. He was so outrageous, a man with a plan, a true visionary. As with anywhere in the world, all the new buildings being built are horrible with 1,000 floors and nothing special about them, so when I walk by any of his buildings my heart melts, it makes me dream of how life must be inside those walls. I cherish and respect it.
What kind of building would you build if you were an architect?
They would all have a pool and two "house" dogs. Each one would be inspired by the people I know inside out. I'd name them with their names. The first one would be my mum's, then I'd start with my band mates.
For Adriano's building, it would have few floors, maybe five. I'd load it with facilities and put some stores on the ground level including an amazing 24-hour drugstore because he loves them.
My mum's building would be surrounded by her favourite trees and flowers. The colour scheme would be all kinds of blue, yellow and orange. The walls on the ground floor would be covered in the pattern of her favourite dress. Everything about it would be kind and warm, even the sound of the doorbell.
For my friends that are a couple I'd make two separate buildings but the rooftop would be one huge apartment linking the two of them.
And at some point I'd make the building with my name. The colour scheme would be pale pink and off-white and brown. I want the outside and ground floor to be covered in mirrors for eternal reflection, but that might be too confusing.
