We take an exclusive look at the Shrimps S/S15 video, and speak to set designer, Suzanne Beirne
"Flintstones, faux and colour," are the three words used by Hannah Weiland to sum up her candy coloured collection of you-won’t-believe-it's-not-fur faux pelts and illustrated silks for S/S15. The Shrimps world is a wonderfully warped suburbia that references 1960’s box shapes and Weiland’s childhood memories, manifestoed in jaguar prints, satchel buckle bags and statement collars. "The brand has evolved," she says, "to incorporate a wider range of faux materials: pony, sting ray and pearls alongside the classic Shrimps fur."
Set design for the presentation came courtesy of Suzanne Beirne: a monochromatic marble landscape, dotted with flowers sprayed in black and grey, inspired by the 1966 satire, Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? “Girls in vivid colour then enter one by one, meandering around rocks and plants. It should feel as if colour is gradually seeping into the space,” she explains. “They are saturated in colour and should fizz and pop against the backdrop.”
Now in its third season, Shrimps sits somewhere between Prada S/S11 and Fendi, with a hearty punch of East London street style thrown in. Canary yellow, dusky violet and pink hues were inspired, like much of fashion this year, by Henri Matisse’s poetic swirls, as well as the geometric work of Mexican architect Luis Barragan. Key pieces include a lightweight malleable faux pony hair coat and faux leopard with bright, contrasting collars.
