Advanced Style explores the refined style of the older generation. With less of an interest in fashion trends, and their look more shaped by their lives and loves, the older people featured on AS are alesson in the difference between fashion and true style. We speak to the blog’s creator, New Yorker Ari Cohen, about the inspiration behind it and why the older generation are a fascinating point of reference for fashion enthusiasts.
What prompted you to start the blog?
I was best friends with my grandma, Bluma, and have always had an appreciation for older people. When I moved to New York I was influenced by all of the creative and stylish older people I saw walking around. I wanted to inspire others to pay attention to their elders and learn from them.
Do you feel older people aren’t represented by the fashion press or even other fashion blogs?
The fashion world is beginning to take notice of older people. Older people and styles are always inspirations behind the scenes, but it’s nice to see them coming into the spotlight as icons.
What do you notice about the way a stylish older person dresses?
Older people seem to dress more for themselves, and over time they know what they are comfortable in and what makes them feel good. I appreciate how they develop a sense of personal style over time and mix items of different decades.
How does it differ from the way a stylish younger person dresses?
Younger people tend to dress to impress others. They still may be figuring out what they like and relying on trends.
As you travel around, which places in your opinion have the most stylish older people?
There are stylish people all over. I don't really have a favourite. I have the most time to walk around and talk with people in New York, so most of the people featured are found here.
What is your favourite post?
I have so many, but right now I love the video that Lina Plioplyte did about Ilona Smithkin, a 90-year-old artist and cabaret singer with huge red eyelashes and a love for colour.
