Rainbow Sequin Boots

February isn’t really a time for sparkle. It’s a time for muted colours, a hundred layers, slippery pavements, the occasional snowstorm and frequent protestations about the chill. However, the couture shows have just taken place, bringing with them an unseasonal explosion of embellishment – see an exclusive close up of Chanel’s extraordinary embroidery here, as well as shimmering veils at Schiaparelli and a whirlwind of excess at Christian Dior. The spirit of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust breathed through Raf Simons’ latest collection for Dior – from striped beaded bodysuits and neon latex thigh boots to acid print New Look skirts and extravagantly embroidered mini dresses. But there was one item that captured the imaginations of AnOther’s Lovers above all others – the rainbow sequin boots, loved by AnOther’s assistant editor Tish Wrigley.

Done well, fashion and culture make for effortless bedfellows. In Simons’ exuberant homage to the most technicolour of Bowie’s personas, he created fantasy items that every woman wanted to wear, not least these boots that are at once extraordinary and eminently practical for the cold weather. As with Saint Laurent’s glittering take on Dorothy’s ruby slippers from last season, they take the outlandish and render it almost sensible, and vice versa. We all need a bit of sparkle in our lives as we shiver our way through short days and bus strikes, and in these boots, we could probably make it safely to the tube without falling over.

So as we put the order in, Wrigley picks her favourite shiny things.

Why did you choose to Love them?
I liked their studied opulence, tucked under the tufted, ribboned skirt of Dior's last look.

If you owned them where would you take them for their first outing and what would you pair them with?
A grey roll neck and a short black woolen skirt for a dinner party at my house – they may look relatively comfortable, but I would want to be within staggering distance of a sofa.

The glitz and glamour of the 1930s or the sparkle and flare of the 1970s?
1930s every time – all the best novels have heroines in flapper dresses.

Who’s your glitter hero/heroine?
I’m with Raf – there’s no one quite like Bowie for sequins. But Shirley MacLaine looks pretty epic in What a Way to Go!

What’s been your own proudest glitter fashion moment?
The time I misunderstood that you’re supposed to apply it in artful streaks and just smeared it over my face like foundation – followed by a long weekend of being mocked mercilessly by one and all.

Do you have a favourite glitter moment in art/popular culture?
I love this glitter graffiti by Theresa Himmer – a very cheering alternative to scrawled tags.

What are you looking forward to about spring?
Going to Kerala – surfing, eating, reading.

What’s the last thing you bought?
So, so many books.
