For the first of our Menswear columns, we present an exclusive preview of Umit Benan’s A/W10 collection. Winner of the first Who is on Next? award organised by L'Uomo Vogue and Pitti Immagine in 2009, this season Benan presents his collection as a performance about the lives and lifestyles of a fictional group or retired rockers.
Umit Benan: Each season, I have used a different idea and character, but they are all from the same family: they are all Umit Benan men. One could be my brother, the others my best-friends or uncles. I’m creating a family. Next season, you might see my dad's uncle who never left his small village, but with a modern touch. With each lookbook my family gets bigger – all the strangers I stop in the streets and photograph for inspiration become part of me. And every time the energy gets better. It gives me great pleasure that these collections bring together people who have nothing in common, but because of the energy we create we all become connected in the end.
