To say that Karl Lagerfeld travels frequently would be something of an understatement. Also true though, his imaginings are more inspired by intellect than, say, looking out of his bedroom window, wherever he might be. Still, in the real world, he is a man of impeccable tastes too. He knows what he wants and exactly where to find it.

"I like the idea that Brown's is the oldest hotel in London" – Karl Lagerfeld

"I like Brown's Hotel on Albermarle Street," he says of his chosen residence in the British capital, "for the food, the location and the rooms with their high ceilings. I like the idea that it is the oldest hotel in London."

Any retail therapy is similarly specific: everything about M Lagerfeld from his monochromatic wardrobe to his ongoing penchant for Diet Coke and Apple technology is that way. The world’s greatest couturier shops for stationary at Smythson, at Dover Street Market "for young designers" – with the confidence that comes only with experience and great talent, he generously and vocally supports many of them – and at Hilditch & Key on Jermyn Street where he buys his signature bespoke shirts with their distinctive high, stiffened collars.

For interiors, the designer looks no further than Established & Sons, curators of critically acclaimed modern lighting and furniture, located a stone’s throw from Old Street. Finally, when dining out, he cites private members’ club No 5 Hertford Street and Nobu Berkeley as his chosen destinations "both with all my friends," Karl Lagerfeld says.
