Simple ideas are usually the best ones, especially on the internet. t h i s / o r / t h a t / ? /, a tumblr blog founded last year is a case in point. The idea: a regular, two-image post which relates to one theme. This, or That, the choice is yours. The brainchild of French-born, London-based Melanie Crete, this site is updated daily with witty, eye-catching imagery from varying genres. Sometimes combining modern and vintage, colour and monochrome, posts have ranged from Chanel No.5 advertisements from then and now, contrasting Bret Easton Ellis book covers, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears blowing out birthday candles, Big Ben vs the Eiffel Tower and the Karl Largerfled Diet/Cindy Crawford's video workout.
What is the idea behind the aesthetic of t h i s / o r / t h a t / ? /? I've always loved moodboards and collages, and I really wanted to do something with my messy iPhoto library. It is simply the easiest and nicest way I came up with to make use of favourite images. I did not have much expectation as it all happened quite organically. It turned out to be pretty addictive!
What has been your favourite post so far? The one with Kate Moss shot by Terry Richardson circa 1997 versus French singer Françoise Hardy back in the day.
Is there anything in particular you look for when posting? No, it's all very spontaneous.
If t h i s / o r / t h a t / ? / had a motto what would it be? ''Harder, better, faster, stronger!''
Has your blog opened up any additional opportunities for you or led to any interesting collaborations? This blog is meant to be fun so I have decided to open it to people and have guests. Anyone can submit their posts — there are a few up already and a few more will be posted in the next couple of days. Nothing to win, just 100% pure fun.
