Mods, American Legends, Marie Antoinette and African warriors all made a visit to New York on day four of fashion week. The Mods came courtesy of Donna Karan’s A/W11 collection, which gave way to sharp, boxy silhouettes in bold block-colour of black, white, red and oranges. Diane von Furstenberg’s Legends graced the catwalk as “muses and artists… travelers and settlers” as she and her right hand man Yvan Mispelaere put. Dressed in fringed vests, graphic gaucho wraps, suede boots and wide-brimmed hats models appeared more Wild West traveler than female icon – von Fursetnberg cited Millicent Rogers and Gloria Vanderbilt as inspirations. Thakoon’s Versailles meets Kenya collection created a visual feast of colour and cultures – boldly juxtaposing wild prints with regal silhouettes and clashing vibrant patterns with muted tones. On paper it seemed like a disaster however in reality it couldn’t have been more daringly dynamic.
