Composer Jordan Hunt shares an exclusive video from his forthcoming EP
Composer, vocalist and multi-intrumentalist, Jordan Hunt's most time consuming role at present is as the musical director of the Theo Adams company, a London-based troupe of avant-garde musicians, singers and dancers. His spellbinding melodic pop sound is showcased in this exclusive video for The Sea, the first single from his forthcoming debut EP out in early 2015. Hunt features in the new issue of AnOther Man, starring David Beckham, and here he speaks to AnOther about his inspirations and his personal formula for success.
Jordan Hunt on classical training...
“When you are classically trained, you’re taught that music is the point. But I’ve grown to believe that an emotional connection with the audience is much more important. Trained singers can be impressive, but you also need that nugget of rawness to draw you in. Without that, there’s no substance, just performance. Iconic singers have both."
Jordan Hunt on his favourite musicians...
"A singer I’ve really learned from is Nina Simone. I really love the album Nina Simone and Piano, which includes I Get Along With You Very Well (Except Sometimes). It’s just her and a piano with tiny bits of arrangement. The way she orchestrates and composes a journey through a song is incredible. She’s known as a singer, but really she’s a songwriter. More recently I’ve been really inspired by Owen Pallett and particularly James Blake. There’s a real sense of emotional turbulence in his voice. It’s electronic dance music but it’s so fragile and emotionally connected. He makes it ok for straight men to think about their emotions. So I guess that’s what I’m aiming for."
Jordan Hunt will be playing the Servant Jazz Quarters, Dalston on November 12. Another Man A/W14 is out now.
