Starring Tilda Swinton, Saoirse Ronan, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Timothée Chalamet and many others, the first trailer for The French Dispatch has just been released
Until yesterday, not much was known about The French Dispatch, the much-anticipated forthcoming release from Wes Anderson. A Twitter account for the film posted a picture of the The French Dispatch’s poster – listing some of its many stars, along with illustrations of their characters – yesterday with the promise of the trailer launching today, which you can now watch.
Confirmed for a July release, The French Dispatch is Anderson’s tenth feature film, and stars many of his frequent collaborators; the movie’s cast includes Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Frances McDormand, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Timothée Chalamet (in his first Anderson film), as well as former AnOther Magazine cover stars Tilda Swinton, Saoirse Ronan and Léa Seydoux.
The ‘French Dispatch’ of the film’s title is a fictional American publication based in 20th-century Paris. Murray and Wilson’s characters, Arthur Howitzer Jr and Herbsaint Salzerac, are respectively based on a former editor and writer for The New Yorker, which Anderson famously loves. “It is more a portrait of this man, of this journalist who fights to write what he wants to write,” Anderson said of the film last year. “It’s not a movie about freedom of the press, but when you talk about reporters you also talk about what’s going on in the real world.” (Speaking in April, the director also admitted that “the story is not easy to explain”.)
