What to Buy Your Friend Who Only Wears Black for Christmas

A curated list of fashion, beauty and homeware for those who wouldn’t be seen dead in colour

Black is a dramatic, mysterious colour – well-known for its connection to darkness, both literally and metaphorically. Commonly associated with evil, death and the occult, it represents power and authority, or, in the case of the late, great Azzedine Alaïa, joy (he dubbed it a “very happy colour”). Some people refuse to wear any other colour, believing, as Christian Dior once said, that “You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it for almost any occasion.”

In recognition of such people (we all know at least one), we present an all-black gift list to facilitate your Christmas shopping, including fashion, beauty and homeware.

Fashion

For those who think in black, a total look is inevitable – from shoes to socks, to bags or even hair clips. For people like this, opt for a Maison Margiela MM6 leather blazer, Proenza Schouler’s balloon-sleeved cashmere sweater and Balenciaga’s slingback leather mules – together, a ready-made all-noir look. In case they already own enough clothes – or simply cannot be persuaded away from their well-loved black pieces – think accessories: Raey’s crystal-trimmed socks or Oscar De La Renta’s tassel drop earrings have a welcome festive feel.

Beauty

Cosmetics should be matched appropriately – at least in their packaging. Chanel’s cosmetics box and Prada’s make-up bag make for perfect containers: fill them with Chanel’s lip shine and Pat McGrath Labs’ liquid eyeliner – both hardworking basics – or African Botanics Fleurs D’Afrique recovery cream and Sister & Co. Skin Food’s coconut and charcoal tooth whitening polish for days spent self-care pampering (which we plan to do plenty of this festive season).

Home

An absence of colour needn’t stop at fashion and beauty: Burberry’s checked umbrella is welcome protection from rainy December days, while Alexander McQueen, published by Abrams, is perfect for your black-loving friend’s coffee table (teamed, perhaps, with Byredo’s rose-scented candle and Missoni’s zig-zag blanket). Since their choice of tea is obvious – sans milk – Royal Doulton’s Olio teapot and Olio black mug by Barber & Osgerby will make for pure tonal satisfaction.
