Alister Mackie, the creative director of Another Man, shares his cultural recommendations – from Merchant Ivory films to Cecil Beaton’s scrapbooks

We at AnOther believe that in this unprecedented time of isolation, economic uncertainty, and social distancing, culture is more important than ever. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be publishing daily to do lists, curated by the AnOther Magazine and Another Man teams, as they share things to look at, listen to, watch, read, or follow, to get you through. Here, Another Man’s creative director Alister Mackie shares his recommendations – from Merchant Ivory films to Cecil Beaton’s scrapbooks.

Watch

Russ Meyer’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Merchant Ivory’s A Room With a View and Mauriceand The Leopard by Visconti for its sumptuous ball scene and beautiful dresses. And Then We Danced and I Carry You With Me are two great new films – both are beautiful, well-made movies. The Martin Margiela: In His Own Words documentary is also great. On TV, Curb Your Enthusiasm seasons one to ten, and Ab Fab, season one – very funny.

Listen

The podcast Dolly Parton’s America – very good and spiritual. I also like Words and Music on BBC Radio 3.

Look

Cecil Beaton: The Art of the Scrapbook published by Assouline. Federico Fellini – Films published by Albin Michel, The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Bergé by Robert Murphy and Ivan Terestchenko, Red Book by C.G. Jung and Art FMR – Les annales de l'art de Franco by Franco Maria Ricci.
