“I have this memory of [my mother] saying that when women want to change the way they dress, the dress becomes a way to express themselves,” said Maria Grazia Chiuri, artistic director of Dior’s womenswear, prior to her Autumn/Winter 2020 show. “Sometimes, you don’t remember the name of the designer, but you remember the name of the woman wearing the dress.” At this show, which was set against a backdrop of flashing neon signs made in collaboration with the anonymous artist collective Claire Fontaine (reading “When women strike the world stops”, “Patriarchy = climate emergency”, “Consent. Consent. Consent”, among other statements), Chiuri recalled her coming of age and feminist awakening in the 1970s. Referencing photographs of herself taken during this time, she presented an informal and relaxed offering, which reinvented the iconography of Dior – the Saddle bag, the silk scarf and the Oblique canvas – for a new era. Here, photographer Charlotte Wales and AnOther Magazine’s senior fashion editor-at-large Agata Belcen capture this collection, in a story that appears in AnOther Magazine Autumn/Winter 2020.
