In the wake of its Pre-Autumn/Winter 2021 mens- and womenswear collections, Alexander McQueen has today revealed its actual Autumn/Winter 2021 womenswear collection, which is titled Anemones.

Taking inspiration from anemone flowers, the collection includes a series of dresses featuring prints of the plants, which Alexander McQueen’s creative director Sarah Burton calls “the most ephemeral flowers”.

Arriving in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic which, in the UK at least, seems to be abating, the collection speaks to life beyond the coronavirus.

“It feels like now is a time for healing, for breathing new life, for exploring echoes from the past to enrich our future,” says Burton. “More than ever, a sense of humanity, of the team working together with a single aim – to make something beautiful, something meaningful – feels both precious and important.”

“We looked at water, for its healing properties, and at anemones,” she continues, explaining what led her to take inspiration from the animals. “[They] are the most ephemeral flowers, here made permanent in cloth. The women wearing the anemone dresses almost become like flowers, like their embodiment, their character – but amplified, grounded, radiant and strong.”

In addition to the anemone dresses, the dramatic collection features a biker dress and jacket; pieced, panelled, asymmetric and reconstructed dresses, along with a tailored jacket, T-shirt and parka jacket. Melding casual and couture, the collection sees white jersey and blue denim adorned with trailing silver lily pad embroideries, demonstrating – along with the rest of the offering – all the beauty and craft that we have come to associate with the fashion house.
