In our Spring/Summer 2022 issue, the acclaimed Vietnamese designer compares fashion with cookery: “the prep takes a long time and can be quite methodical, while the actual act of eating, or the show itself, is over in the blink of an eye”

This article is taken from the Spring/Summer 2022 issue of AnOther Magazine:

“So many of my best memories revolve around food. We started Peter Do out of my living room over a lot of dinners. The team would come over at the weekend and I’d cook for them all – then we’d stay up late into the night discussing ideas. My love of cooking came from my grandma and my dad. He was a chef in the army and taught me how to make traditional Vietnamese dishes. I make a big pot of pho every Sunday, because that’s what I did with him when he was alive. We didn’t have a lot in common but we really bonded when we cooked together. I think there are a lot of similarities between cooking a meal and creating a collection – with both, the prep takes a long time and can be quite methodical, while the actual act of eating, or the show itself, is over in the blink of an eye.”

Vietnamese designer Peter Do moved to Philadelphia when he was a teenager. After studying at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and winning the LVMH Graduate Prize in 2014, his design training began in earnest, with him working under Phoebe Philo as assistant designer at Celine until 2016. He started his eponymous label two years later, making a name for himself with cool, cleverly cut tailoring shot through with flashes of subversion – the likes of Bella Hadid, Zendaya and Dua Lipa have all slipped into his liquid, open-to-the-navel silk shirts and slinky, revealing knits. In another life Do would likely be driving a food truck around town. “Street food out the side and clothes out the back, maybe?” he says with a laugh.
