Ten Reasons to Buy AnOther Magazine Spring/Summer 2022

“Outsiders are the most interesting characters because they aren’t quite recognisable,” cover star Willem Dafoe tells Hannah Lack in the latest issue of AnOther Magazine. And while every issue is inspired by that spirit – by creatives who play by no other rules than their own – this one is “an outright dedication, a celebration of maverick spirits through fashion, film and art – life,” as editor-in-chief Susannah Frankel writes in her introduction to the issue. Every protagonist, contributor and title in the Spring/Summer 2022 issue looks to those freewheeling spirits that continue to shape culture and society today, paving the way for generations to come. 1. Margaret Qualley is a mercurial talent. She talks to Sirin Kale about her breakthrough role as the free-loving Manson cult-member Pussycat in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, her career-defining turn in universally acclaimed 2021 Netflix series Maid and how she’s still learning to embrace her own messiness and take up space. 2. Spanning roles as Marvel’s Green Goblin, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Van Gogh and Jesus Christ, Willem Dafoe’s career boasts more than 120 film roles. 3. The majestic British actor Jodie Turner-Smith talks to American playwright, actor and friend Jeremy O Harris in an intimate interview touching on transformative love, motherhood and the responsibility of storytelling as the first black Anne Boleyn, as well as her upcoming roles in Kogonada’s After Yang and Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s White Noise. 4. Tap into the legacy of maître couturier Azzedine Alaïa with his eponymous house’s new creative director Pieter Mulier. In conversation with Alexander Fury, the designer discusses Alaïa’s “timeless simplicity, sensuality and sexuality” – as well as the launch of his sophomore collection and its collaboration with the Picasso Administration. Photographed on the inimitable Mariacarla Boscono by Willy Vanderperre and styled by Olivier Rizzo, the collection is an homage to Monsieur Alaïa, “the greatest sculptor of fashion”. 

5. Last November, the world lost one of its brightest and most inspiring talents, Virgil Abloh. A fashion pioneer whose game-changing artistic vision, maverick spirit and endless generosity fostered the birth of a real cultural revolution. This new issue opens with a heartfelt tribute to the former Louis Vuitton creative director, written by his friend and AnOther Magazine’s co-founder, Jefferson Hack.

6. The unique approach at the core of the work of innovative young designers Chopova Lowena, Thebe Magugu and Ahluwalia is forming a new fashion landscape. We talk to them as they break new ground –photographed by Thue Nørgaard and styled by Agata Belcen.
